Before You Go
Grand Hotel and Mackinac Island are truly unique destinations. Before you visit us, here are a few things to know to make your trip easier.
Check-In and Check-Out
Check-in time is after 4:00 p.m. and check-out time is 11:00 a.m. Every effort will be made to accommodate early arrivals and late check-outs. Please notify Grand Hotel if you have any special requests.
Since Grand Hotel is a resort, we want you to feel at ease and dress comfortably. During the day, casual resort clothing is appropriate. Prior to 6:30pm please no midriff baring tops, sweatpants or cut-off shorts for ladies. For gentlemen no sleeveless shirts, sweatpants, or cut-off shorts.
Since every evening at Grand Hotel is a special occasion after 6:30pm dresses, skirts, blouses, dress sweaters and dress slacks for ladies are preferred, while gentlemen are required to wear a suit coat, necktie and dress pants, no denim or shorts. This applies for all areas inside the hotel with the exception of the Cupola Bar. Children 12 years and older are expected to be in dress similar to the adults. Click here for more information.
If you arrive by ferry, luggage transfer is simple and convenient. When you check in your luggage with the ferry service on the mainland, it will be tagged and delivered directly to your hotel room. Upon check-in, present your luggage tags at the front desk. Please note your luggage may take up to two hours to get to the hotel from the dock. If you are arriving close to 6:00 p.m. you may want to bring your evening wear with you to the hotel.
For your return trip back to the mainland, follow the in-room instructions. Your luggage will be tagged and transferred from your room to a secure location on the appropriate mainland dock. We request a minimum two-hour window for the transfer.
Getting Here from the Boat Docks
Grand Hotel is a 15- to 20-minute walk from the boat docks. For your convenience, Grand Hotel operates horse-drawn carriages between the docks and Grand Hotel. As with all taxi service on Mackinac Island, there is a $5.00 per person fee and seats are on a first-come, first-served basis. We cannot guarantee Grand Hotel carriages will meet all ferry boats, nor can we guarantee seats for all Grand Hotel guests.
Mackinac Island Maps
Whether you are walking, hiking or biking, download and consult these maps to help you explore the island.
Mackinac Island enjoys a mild spring, temperate summer and crisp fall temperatures. Because the island is located in the middle of the Straits of Mackinac, weather can be unpredictable. We recommend packing layers and don’t forget your walking shoes.
